Bill Palmer & Terésa Hadland – Movement Shiatsu Masterclass

Venue: Ceres Meeting Rooms

Course duration: 3 days

Cost: $840

How to use  Somatic Exploration and the “Three Family” Cycles to deal with trauma and emotional or energetic disturbances.

This course is designed for people who have studied with Bill and Terésa before, but is also open to experienced practitioners of any form of body-therapy. Movement Shiatsu specialises in dealing with chronic conditions, trauma and disabilities but is also particularly effective as a method of wellness coaching since it shows clients how to use subtle awareness of their body to resolve internal conflicts and optimise health.

The core of the course will be understanding the way in which Qi functions transform into each other. These transformations form cycles through which processes are initiated, transform and nourish the person. We will show how interruptions to these cycles are the cause of both emotional and physical problems and how to work with movement and touch to resolve them.

Bill was the originator of Movement Shiatsu and the theory of these cycles came from his research into infant movement development. In Europe, they have come to be called the ‘Three Families’ and other people have created different forms of work based on his theory, but this is a unique opportunity to learn the developmental archetypes underlying them. This will show how to incorporate movement explorations into forms of bodywork, like Shiatsu, in which clients are usually passive recipients.

The course will be highly practical and will introduce the unique techniques of Movement Shiatsu in a way that you can easily integrate into your own work. These will include:

  • Understanding the Three Families of meridians and how Qi cycles and transforms within them.
  • Identifying interruptions to these cycles and how to work with the body to liberate them
  • Dealing with trauma and emotional issues through the body
  • Integrating talking with bodywork and making body-therapy more interactive

Giving clients ‘homework’ to carry on the work of a session through Inner Qigong

Bill and Terésa will also present the Six Forms of Touch workshop in Melbourne from January 27-29.

About the presenters

Bill Palmer

Bill Palmer is Director of the School for Experiential Education in the UK. He started studying Shiatsu in 1973 and was one of the pioneers of Shiatsu in Europe. He is the originator of Movement Shiatsu, and of the Three Family system of meridian work.  This is an interactive style of bodywork that empowers clients to explore themselves through guided movement and to work on their own energetic patterns rather than depending passively on the therapist to treat them.

It evolved from years of work with children and disability. It has also been inspired by Bill’s study of Body-Mind Centering, Wolfson Voicework and Gestalt Therapy. It is an effective way to work with chronic patterns which are resistant to change. With his wife, Terésa, he teaches postgraduate courses in Movement Shiatsu and Inner Qigong in 10 countries worldwide.

Teresa Hadland

Terésa Hadland has studied Shiatsu since 1980 in the East-West Centre in Edinburgh and London, the Iokai Centre in Japan and with Sonia Moriceau in the UK. For 11 years she taught on the BA in Complementary and Holistic Therapies at Derby University and is now Senior Tutor at the School for Experiential Education. Since 2000 she has coordinated the assessment of teachers for the Shiatsu Society. She now runs two busy practices in the UK and, with Bill Palmer,  co-teaches courses in Inner Qigong and Movement Shiatsu worldwide. Her special interest is in how emotional issues can be resolved through working with the body.
